The Institute for Science, Society and Policy (ISSP) hosted a talk by Dr. Schelly, who is the 2022 Fulbright Research Chair in Science and Society, ISSP University of Ottawa. In her talk she summarized some of her work that examines socio-technological systems transitions (STST) and how her learnings are applicable in climate change research and meaningful engagement with communities. Dr. Schelly was invited to speak to the staff at Wonder for Good, a network of professionals working on public opinion and strategizing who aim to make progress on important social issues by recognizing humans as heartwired and using that insight to create change. Dr. Schelly shared her work on energy transitions and some of the unexpected motivators, opportunities, and barriers to change that result from community engaged approaches to understanding public perceptions of the role energy plays in communities.

As a community partner of the MICARES project, Groundwork is committed to improving the cultural competency and knowledge of Tribal Nations in Michigan among its own staff. The Equity Education Series, is one such initiative. At this event, Dr. Schelly and Dr. Marie Schaefer (who was a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University) spoke about the Anishinaabe and how Anishinaabe learnings can be applied to energy systems decision making.

Groundwork's Michigan Clean Energy Conference and Michigan Climate Action Network (MiCAN) Michigan Climate Action summit came together for this impactful event in May 2021. This event focused on solutions to contemporary energy crisis. Dr. Schelly discussed aspects of the MICARES project as part of the session on Tribes and Clean Energy.

A community solar project in L'Anse, Michigan was developed based on the shared values, interest, and priorities of the community. Faculty and students of the EEP program at MTU learned about the priorities and concerns of the residents through community engagement, which helped shape the direction and ultimate success of this project.
